With ceramics and stoneware, wellbeing reigns in the bathroom
The spa is the ideal place for pampering and cherishing yourself. This prêt-à-porter wellness centre can be re-created in a spa-style bathroom, which adds a truly special space to the home.
History and cultures have given us very different wellness locations, although all very elegant and with great appeal: luxury spas, ancient Roman baths, the Turkish bath and the Finnish sauna. In this article, we will see how to use these very different inputs for the bathrooms of our homes.
5-star spa style
A large space with walls lined with marble or stone-look ceramic tiles, a twin washbasin and large mirrors, projects you straight into the mood of a spa of your dreams.
For the walls you can opt for pale-coloured coverings – white, golden or sandy shade – or deeper hues such as taupe or dark grey verging on black. One example is the Magnifica marble and stone-effect ceramic tiles in the large 60x180 cm size, in simple natural texture or in 3D version with relief stripes.
If a spa-style modern bathroom is fitted with a shower with vertical hydromassage, to define its enclosure Magnifica by Marazzi features original mosaics with circular or tiny strip chips.
Like Roman baths
For this inspiration, the wall-covering of the spa-look bathroom just has to be marble, with rich veining, in the white-beige, white-grey, brown or black variants. The Marazzi Allmarble Wall marble-effect ceramic collection offers it in the form of matt or glossy tiles in the large 40x120 cm size, for combination with floor coverings in the twin Allmarble marble-effect stoneware collection or other stone or marble-effect stoneware collections.
If the room is large enough, you can fit your spa-type bathroom with shelves and little tables, to ensure everything is always within reach. You could even add a couple of stools, a small bench or - for the lucky ones - a chaise-longue.
Middle-Eastern moods
On the other hand, a multi-function shower with Turkish bath could be the right concept for a modern spa-effect bathroom inspired by the Turkish bath or hammam, with floors and walls covered completely with marble, for an elegant, sumptuous look. The large marble-look porcelain stoneware slabs in the Grande Marble Look collection, which reproduce no fewer than 17 varieties of marbles and stones with elegant accuracy, not only provide the floor and wall coverings for a spa-effect bathroom but can also be shaped to create tailor-made furnishings, such as a countertop with inset washbasin, a cabinet or the bathtub.
The spa-effect bathroom may be monochrome, with continuity between walls and floor, or may utilise contrasts between vertical and horizontal surfaces, with marble-look tiles in more than one colour, or with the marble effect combined with other material looks in the Grande collection of maxi-size porcelain stoneware tiles.
Last but not least, the Nordic tradition
The traditional Finnish sauna is made of wood, so a wood modern spa-style bathroom may have floor and walls tiled in wood-look stoneware.
Are you, like us, a fan of the Nordic tradition? The Marazzi catalogue offers dozens of collections featuring wood in its different identities, such as the new Vero wood-effect stoneware collection. Inspired by oak – of which it highlights the fibres, knots and flaws, as well as the marks left by its shaping –, Vero comes in 4 light and dark natural shades and 2 large plank sizes (20x120 and 22.5x180 cm).
