Undertaken by studio A1Engineering, led by architects Sandra Deiana and Giovanni Antonio Spano, the renovation of the San Ponziano parish complex in Olbia involved the recovery for the community of an old church, giving it a new architectural character that irradiates a fresh light.

The marble-effect ceramic slabs of the Marazzi Grande Marble Look collection, Saint Laurent shade, cover the altar and pulpit to give these two features an apparent lightness: they seem to float above the floor, which is in Grande Marble Look in the pale Golden White Lux colour.

The architects’ daring approach was to incorporate the traditional characteristics typical of rural Sardinian churches - their colours and their materials, such as plaster, granite, wood and the marble look provided by the ceramic slabs - in a modern architectural project, conforming to modern criteria in aspects such as energy efficiency and lighting design.

In 2019, the San Ponziano parish complex in Olbia received an honourable mention in the institutional category of the La Ceramica e il Progetto (Ceramic Tiles and Architecture) Award, the architecture competition which selects the best architectural projects using Italian ceramic tiles on the basis of their creativity, functionality, aesthetic taste, quality of installation and environmental sustainability of material.
