Ten Years of Design Told by the ADI Ceramics&Bathroom Design Award

Reading time minutes

The story of design across the supply chain is told through a selection of products, with Marazzi participating with the Materika collection in the structured Spatula version. The exhibition at the ADI Design Museum in Milan from October 8 to 27, curated by Carlo Branzaglia and Wladimiro Bendandi, retraces the first ten years of the Ceramics&Bathroom Design Award @ Cersaie.

The design of the ceramics supply chain, told through the winning products of the ADI Ceramics&Bathroom Design Award, features the Materika collection by Marazzi (with the 3D Spatula decoration), which won the Ceramic Design Award in 2015, awarded by ADI. The exhibition at the ADI Design Museum in Milan from October 8 to 27, curated by Carlo Branzaglia and Wladimiro Bendandi, retraces the first ten years of the Ceramics&Bathroom Design Award @ Cersaie.

Created in collaboration with the Association for Industrial Design and now in its tenth edition, the ADI Ceramics&Bathroom Design Award @ Cersaie recognizes the best Italian products exhibited at the international ceramics fair, which best combine innovation and design quality in the fields of ceramic surfaces and bathroom furnishings. The chosen products form the preselection for the ADI Design Index 2025, the annual publication of the Association for Industrial Design that collects the best Italian design currently in production.

At the ADI Design Museum, the institutional home of the permanent collection of the Compasso d’Oro, the historical memory of Italian design from 1954 to today, in the room dedicated to the world’s oldest design award, one can revisit the history of the more than fifty products awarded over the first decade of the ADI Ceramics&Bathroom Design Award.

Among these is Marazzi’s thin porcelain stoneware Materika with the three-dimensional Spatula structure, awarded the Ceramic Design Award in 2015. This innovative proposal stands out both aesthetically—reminiscent of the manual gesture of applying cement with a traditional spatula—and technically, through the use of digital printing technology on a thickness of only 6 mm. An eco-sustainable collection made with 30% to 40% recycled material, Marazzi’s Materika, in the large 40×120 cm format for greater visual continuity, interprets cement and its natural colors in their most elegant expression with satin surfaces characterized by a compact, matte finish that creates a striking effect.

Displayed on the sides of the Compasso d’Oro room, a series of video screens tell the story of the role of design within production chains, interpreted through the lenses of economics, anthropology, and technology, using data series and testimonies. In the adjacent room, this ceramic design experience concludes with the documentary ‘Ceramics of Italy. A Journey into Sustainability,’ showcasing the industry’s commitment to decarbonizing production and protecting territories and raw materials.

The exhibition is organized by ADI, the Association for Industrial Design, in collaboration with Confindustria Ceramica, Cersaie, and EdiCer.
