Overturning preconceptions, in this dental clinic in Catalonia the Franquet Barran architecture firm restyled the interiors to convey a mood of calm and wellbeing to patients and to create a distinctive, elegant yet accessible space, aided by original use of Art porcelain stoneware with its Venetian Seminato effect

In recent years there has been a widespread trend amongst medical centres not only to adopt state-of-the-art treatment aids but also to transform their premises. Reception areas and waiting rooms are leaving impersonal looks and dull colours behind to become welcoming places which give patients an idea of comfort similar to that conveyed by hospitality venues. This is certainly the case with the Junyent Smile Clinic, a dental centre at Manresa, near Barcelona, where interior designer Jordi Franquet of Spanish architecture firm Franquet Barrau styled the new layout.

“From our very first briefing session,” Jordi Franquet told us, “the client asked us to come up with a project that would mark a clear break with sector stereotypes and their cold lights and sterile interiors, and provide an attractive, functional environment.” So the solution offered comprises spacious communal areas, furnished with designer lights and features, and five treatment “cubicles” equipped with the latest professional dentistry technologies. “However, the project’s most distinctive feature,“ Jordi Franquet continued, “is the reception area on the first floor, where the neutral walls emphasise the bright shine of the steel staircase and central island, further highlighted by the floor tiles, which offer a sophisticated reinterpretation of the famous Venetian Terrazzo”, so effective that it was used for the whole of the interior and is echoed in the upholstery of the large semicircular sofas. In fact, the Art porcelain stoneware collection has an unusual, natural 3D effect generated by marble-look chips of different sizes, both tone-on-tone and in contrasting colours, distributed over a concrete-look base. The series is available in five colours, three surfaces and six sizes, easily combined with other materials in mix & match design schemes to meet the most widely varying demands from architects. Here Jordi Franquet has chosen it in the matt Grey variant in 60x60 cm size.
