The MIC (International Museum of Ceramics) in Faenza is currently running a retrospective “Gio Ponti. Ceramiche 1922-1967” (until 13 October) dedicated to this “inventor of Made in Italy”. At the same time, it is also hosting the new edition of its Superfici d’Autore: a series of installations created by Italy’s leading ceramics brands that celebrate this material as interpreted by internationally famous designers (until 6 October).
For the occasion, Marazzi has rediscovered Triennale, the iconic “four curve tile” designed by Gio Ponti and Alberto Rosselli in 1960, here interpreted in a Marazzi custom collection. Commissioned by Marazzi to produce Triennale in 1960, the highly respected Studio Ponti-Fornaroli-Rosselli came up with a design work completely unlike the traditional square or rectangular tiles. Simple and elegant, Triennale was like a piece from a children’s jigsaw puzzle, and immediately became an Italian design icon. Still in production today, Triennale (named after the exhibition where it was first launched) is a symbol of Marazzi’s design excellence and its ceaseless dedication to research and experimentation.
At the MIC in Faenza, Marazzi offers a contemporary rereading of the iconic “four curve tile”, an anthem to ceramic coverings’ modularity and flexibility, where various colours from the custom collection, in the original Triennale shape but on a larger scale, feature in playful, versatile tone-on-tone or contrasting surfaces. The deep, glossy shades become simple elements that construct an inspired interlocked ensemble, alternating pieces placed vertically and horizontally, and straight and curved lines, in a splendid illustration of ceramic coverings’ ability to become a work of art, with infinite design possibilities.
