What inspired you in the creation of the Terramater collection?
Terramater is the culmination of an extensive research process into raw materials, glazes, colours and surfaces. It stems from the desire to reclaim the red clays characteristic of the Sassuolo, Modena area, where the company was established, and to create a product composed predominantly of recycled raw materials. It also serves as a tribute to the fiftieth anniversary of Marazzi’s fast single firing patent, which in 1974 marked a technological breakthrough in the history of industrial ceramics by enabling a single kiln pass instead of two to produce the finished product, significantly reducing both time and energy consumption.
Which environments did you envision during the development of Terramater?
Terramater is designed for those seeking authentic, imperfect surfaces and warm materials that invite tactile engagement. This collection merges tradition and innovation, offering a sensual and textured product that aesthetically honours the ceramics of the 1970s—rich in colour—reinterpreted through a contemporary and decorative lens.
Terramater is produced using a specialised glazing process. Could you elaborate on it?
The distinctly tactile appearance of Terramater derives from a specialised glazing process: glazes, granules, and natural oxides fuse with the red clay during firing, creating unique effects that evoke traditional ceramic firing techniques.
How did you define such an intense colour palette?
The Terramater colour palette is born from the reaction between coloured clays and natural oxides. These are rich, intense tones designed to offer extensive compositional freedom, also thanks to decorative structures where tonal variations are more pronounced.
What raw materials are used in Terramater, and what advantages do they offer?
The collection originates from a conscious selection of materials: 60% consists of recycled content and local red clays, sourced locally. A sustainable solution that reduces environmental impact and imparts the product with an authentic aesthetic, characterised by artisanal charm, where imperfection becomes a distinctive hallmark.
What considerations guided your choice of tile formats?
We selected modular formats—a square and two rectangles—to provide maximum creative freedom. For the first time in the Crogiolo collection, the formats are slightly larger, designed to cover floors and expansive surfaces.
The collection features a variety of textures. How important is the tactile experience?
The tactile experience is fundamental. With textures such as Ritmo and Losanga, Terramater invites touch. Ritmo features three-dimensional ridges that bring movement to the wall, while Losanga draws inspiration from classic motifs, where the compositional freedom of the laying rhythm offers a significant advantage to the designer.
To what extent can tiles transform the spatial perception of an environment?
Significantly; the surfaces of Terramater have a commanding presence: their brilliance and material richness all contribute to imparting personality and depth to spaces. They are not merely coverings but true protagonists of the space, capable of redefining its atmosphere.
