Bathroom Special: The Spa
reading time: 4 minutes

Connected, open spaces that highlight a relationship with the outside, light and natural elements. The spa bathroom evokes the ancient tradition of a room devoted to people’s well-being and to body worship. Materials that resemble natural stone, mosaics and warm earthy textures are favoured for the design of relaxation environments.
Since the times of the Roman baths, these spaces devoted to well-being have focused on beauty: monumental buildings or urban microcosms within the city. These places, when public, have always been dedicated to socialising and more generally to disconnecting from “everyday chores” and to personal care.
Today’s wellness centres preserve the connecting confined and specialised spaces that distinguished the original model, a structure that can also be found in domestic spas, which have greatly contributed to the design of disconnected environments devised for areas based on their function.
The spa concept offers contemporary bathrooms a vision of relaxation, meditation and return to natural elements.
The bathroom therefore becomes a place to disconnect and escape from noise and stress. Designing these rooms involves focusing on several key elements: aesthetic rigour, simple forms and a few clever finishes that transform the bathroom into a place for body worship, a haven of relaxation, rest and meditation.
The architectural elements dialogue with the surrounding environment: the relationship between areas is highlighted by natural light, the spaces are open and the walls become large windows that create a continuum between the interior and exterior.
To recreate these effects, we chose, on the one hand, a colder and ‘stony’ solution, obtained with the use of Mystone Ardesia in the three Antracite, Cenere and Bianco variants, mixed together on the floor with a herringbone pattern consisting of 20x90 cm custom listel tiles paired with the Zellige collection Gesso/Carbone mosaic used for the wall covering in the showers.
On the other hand, we obtained a warmer and brighter version by using the Terratech series in the Salvia and Polvere colours and their mosaic format, laid in the shower area and around the washbasins.
