This impressive exhibit dedicated to the Italian Ceramics District’s first 50 years features rare locally-produced ceramics dating from 1889-1939 and tells the stories of companies present at the dawn of the industry and recounts the careers and lives of the pioneers who helped to develop it.
A hundred or so amazing, unique pieces manufactured by historic companies such as Fabbrica Rubbiani, Ceramiche Marazzi, Marca Corona, Saime, Saces and Ceramica Carani & Giglioli narrate the history of the period from 1889, considered to mark the start of industrial tile production in Sassuolo, to just before the outbreak of the Second World War. This crucial half-century was fundamental in the history of the ceramics district and prepared the ground for the boom enjoyed by ceramic tile producers in the post-war years.
In particular, for the first time the exhibition unveils the Medici Collection, a treasure of more than 7,000 pieces that trace the evolution of ceramics production in the provinces of Modena and Reggio Emilia, donated to the City of Fiorano Modenese by the heirs of keen collector Antonio Medici, who died in 2021.
The exhibition, made possible by the invaluable input of Marazzi Group for historic research and Ceramiche Marca Corona for publication of the Catalogue, was organised in partnership by Municipality of Fiorano Modenese, Ceramics Museum, Confindustria Ceramica, Acimac and Società Ceramica Italiana.
